Warid (Pakistan)Warid Telecom, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Group and Singtel Group, is a mobile network operator that provides mobile calling, messaging, internet, roaming, and value-added services through its GSM telecommunications infrastructures in Pakistan. After acquiring a license to provide mobile and fixed telephony services in 2004, Warid rolled out its commercial services in the country in May 2005. In less than three months since its initial establishment, Warid’s subscriber base reached more than 1 million. Such performance is, without a doubt, a result of the network’s aggressive yet fair marketing strategies in providing affordable and high-quality mobile service to its fast-growing subscriber base. In other countries, Warid Telecom supports wireless services in Congo and Uganda and also plans to launch commercial coverage in Georgia and Ivory Coast. Its major shareholders, Abu Dhabi Group and Singapore Telecom, are heralded as dominant players in the telecommunications industry in their respective countries. The Abu Dhabi Group is the largest business group in the Middle East, while SingTel also dominates the mobile market in Singapore, with shares in other foreign countries such as Philippines, Thailand, and Australia, among many others. In Pakistan, Warid markets its products and services through
Zahi for postpaid billing and Zem for prepaid tariffs. In 2011, the mobile
service provider introduced Glow, Warid’s youth-oriented mobile brand that
offers affordable multimedia and internet access besides supporting equally
cost-effective mobile calling and messaging services. With such marketing
strategies, Warid’s success in Pakistan’s mobile market is indeed remarkable.
Additional Product Information
Warid Prepaid Airtime Plans The wireless company’s prepaid brand, Zem, offers a full range of mobile services without the need for contract sign-ups and monthly bills. Also, mobile users may choose a per-second, 30-second, or 60-second charging scheme, depending on their calling needs. Zem 1 Second With this option, calling to Friends and Family (FnF) numbers costs only (rupees) Rs0.02 per second, while all other calls to Warid numbers are charged Rs0.03 per second. Calling to off-net numbers, on the other hand, costs Rs0.04 per second to landlines and Rs0.05 per second to mobile numbers. On this plan, mobile users may register up to five on-net numbers to take advantage of FnF calling. Zem Lowest Call Rate 30 Seconds The 30-second scheme delivers more cost-effective tariff, charging only Rs0.49 per 30 seconds for on-net FnF calling, while airtime to FnF off-net numbers or to other on-net numbers costs Rs0.75 per 30 seconds. All other off-net calls, whether made to landline or mobile numbers, cost Rs.0.85 per 30 seconds. Also, this prepaid package allows subscribers to register up to four on-net and 1 off-net numbers for FnF calling rates. Zem 60 Seconds Mobile users who make calls more frequently may opt-in for the Zem 60 Seconds package, which delivers more minutes with less. A 60-second call to FnF numbers, for instance, costs only Rs0.75, and for all other on-net calls, only Rs1.25. Meanwhile, 60 seconds of talk time to other mobile networks and to landlines cost Rs2.25 and Rs1.75, respectively. Just like the Zem 1 Second package, this prepaid plan allows mobile users to register up to five on-net numbers for FnF calling. Warid Prepaid Messaging and VAS Tariffs Regardless of the airtime plan, each text message costs Rs0.50 to on-net numbers, Rs1 to other networks, and Rs5 to international destinations. As for multimedia messaging, each MMS sent or received costs Rs3. Meanwhile, GPRS web browsing costs Rs1.2 per 64 kilobytes of web data.
