Vodafone (India)Vodafone Essar is a mobile network operator owned by the Vodafone Group, a global telecommunications company with an aggregate subscriber base of about 358 million as of 2010. In India, Vodafone Essar serves more than 134 million customers, providing GSM mobile services that include local mobile calling, national and international long distance, SMS, and broadband internet. Vodafone also provides mobile coverage in more than 30 countries across five continents. Vodafone Essar’s history dates back to 1994, when the telecom’s predecessor, Hutchison Telecom, acquired a license to operate cellular services in Mumbai. In 2007, Vodafone moved forward with the US$10.7 billion acquisition of 67% of Hutchison Essar’s stake in India. Later on, the mobile network was renamed as “Vodafone,” now the second largest mobile network in the country in terms of revenue. In May 2010, the wireless provider acquired the license to deploy 3G infrastructures in nine telecom circles of Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Kolkata, Maharashtra & Goa, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (East), and West Bengal. In 2011, Vodafone announced its US$500 million investment to install 3G infrastructures in an effort to improve the network’s existing technology. Vodafone Essar provides GSM mobile coverage under the frequency of 900MHz and 1800MHz. Because of Vodafone’s commitment in providing high-quality
cellular services in India, the wireless network was heralded as the “Most
Respected Company” in the telecoms industry and the “Most Trusted Service
Brand” in 2010. Today, Vodafone continues to provide seamless services with
affordable postpaid and prepaid tariffs to attract new customers and retain
existing ones. With the telecom’s prepaid plans and services, millions of
customers are slowly shifting toward such option, which demand lesser
commitments with no contracts or mandatory monthly bills.

And just like the Per Second Plan, the Per Minute Plan charges the same text messaging rates of Rs1 per local SMS, Rs1.50 per national SMS, and Rs5 per international SMS.
