Tigo (Laos)Tigo Lao is a mobile brand owned by Millicom Lao, a joint venture between Millicom International (MIC) and the Government of Lao PDR. On a global scale, MIC operates 16 wireless networks in Africa, Central America, South America, South East Asia, and South Asia. In the local market, Tigo provides voice, roaming, messaging, and data services using GSM 900/1800 MHz infrastructures. Millicom Lao established its commercial operations in the country in April 2003, when the mobile network initially launched its previous brand name, “Tango.” Within the first two years of operations, the wireless network already supported extensive local and roaming services to its growing number of subscribers, eventually completing the deployment of network infrastructures across the country in such a short period. In 2007, Millicom moved forward with the renaming of its previous brand to “Tigo,” marked by the network’s aggressive marketing strategies in terms of promoting GPRS/EDGE, multimedia messaging, and entertainment services, which are undoubtedly geared for a younger subscriber base. In 2008, Millicom Lao began rolling-out its Wimax broadband coverage, promising faster broadband mobile internet connectivity. The same year also witnessed a surge of additional subscribers by about 1.3 million. Today, Millicom continues to provide not only high-quality mobile services, but also offers one of the most admired customer support in the telecommunications market.
