Tigo (Ghana)

In Ghana, Tigo is a cellular brand owned by Millicom Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular S.A. (MIC), which is heralded as a leading telecommunications provider that operates in 17 markets across 16 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. With all of Millicom’s mobile market combined, the telecom boasts more than 392 million subscribers.

With the incorporation of Millicom Ghana Limited in 1990, the telecommunications provider was lauded as the first network operator to penetrate the Sub-Saharan market in Africa. Two years later, Millicom Ghana launched its initial cellular operations under the brand name “Buzz,” operating GSM mobile services that catered to a younger subscriber base. In 2006, the mobile network eventually adopted the new mobile brand, “Tigo.”

From February to June 2011, Tigo suffered a significant decline of its customer base, which totaled to a loss of more than 900,000 subscribers as reported by the National Communications Authority (NCA). However, Tigo continues to improve its mobile services by deploying 3.5G infrastructures, promising faster data download and internet access speeds. Such improvements are expected to win back more customers in the long run.

Millicom Ghana currently provides 100% digital telecommunications services across the country, offering local and international mobile calling, text messaging, multimedia messaging, data, and roaming services to more than 3,200,000 subscribers.

Tigo Prepaid Pay-as-You-Go Plans

In Ghana, new subscribers may purchase a new Tigo SIM card worth (Ghana cedi) GH₵0.50, which requires no activation fees or one-time charges. With the new SIM card, Tigo customers enjoy affordable on-net calling rate of GH₵0.0025 per second during peak hours and GH₵0.0016 per second during off-peak hours. On the other hand, calls to other networks, whether mobile or fixed lines, are charged a flat rate of GH₵0.0027 per second regardless of the time of day.

As for text messaging, sending each SMS costs GH₵0.0403 to Tigo numbers, GH₵0.0477 to other network operators and GH₵0.1124 to international destinations. Sending a multimedia message, regardless of the destination, costs GH₵0.10 per 100 kilobyte of data (KB).

Tigo offers mobile internet browsing at a cost of GH₵0.10 per 100 KB of internet data.

Tigo SmartBrowse

With the SmartBrowse On-Subscription internet package, one may register 5MB (GH₵0.30), 20MB (GH₵0.99), or 100MB (GH₵1.99) of data. To register, subscribers may send “5” to 1516, “20” to 1517, or “100” to 1518 for the 5MB, 20MB, or 100MB option, respectively.

The On-Demand packages, on the other hand, delivers 5MB (GH₵0.35), 50MB (GH₵2.99), or 1GB (GH₵25) of data. Mobile users may send “5” to 1515, “50” to 1515, or “1” to 2510 to take advantage of the 5MB, 50MB, or 1GB data plan, respectively.

Tigo Prepaid Refills

Tigo prepaid top-ups may be purchased from Tigo flagship stores, retail stores, or authorized dealers located in Ghana. One may also top-up his or her Tigo airtime by buying Tigo prepaid load on Babblebug.com, which sells international prepaid refill top-ups. Babblebug.com offers Tigo prepaid mobile recharge denominations of US$4, US$8, US$12, US$20, and US$24, which will be converted to Ghana’s national currency upon purchase.
