Tigo - El Salvador
Tigo (El Salvador)
Formerly known as Telemovil, Tigo is a cellular brand owned by Millicom International Celular (MIC), a mobile network operator with TDMA, CDMA, and GSM infrastructures in 16 countries across Central America, South America, South-East Asia, and Africa. Based in Luxembourg, MIC also owns Amnet, which provides broadband internet and Cable television in Honduras, Costa Rica, and El Salvador.
In 2004, Tigo was launched in El Salvador as part of MIC’s expansion plans to promote the new brand name on a global scale. Today, Tigo is one of the leading telecommunications providers in El Salvador with more than 2.4 million subscribers. Tigo El Salvador operates GSM/GPRS/3G coverage under the frequency of 850MHz.
Salvador, Tigo competes with Movistar, Claro, Digicel, and Red. Tigo,
however, is well-known for having 90% of its subscriber base on prepaid plans
and pay-as-you-go services. Because Tigo prepaid plans require no monthly bills,
annual contracts, and pre-termination penalties, more subscribers switch to
