Telcel Amigo (Mexico)

Telcel, a subsidiary of América Móvil, is a Mexican-based mobile service provider that offers voice, data, and push-to-talk (radio) services. The mobile network operates AMPS, GSM, and TDMA telecommunications infrastructures across Mexico, where América Móvil’s headquarters is also located.

The mobile brand Telcel, formerly known as Radio Movil Dipsa, launched its first wireless coverage in 1989. A year later, the cellular provider penetrated the Federal District and other major areas in the country. As of December 2006, Telcel’s services reached more than 60% of the entire area of Mexico or an equivalent of 90% population coverage.

Telcel’s mobile market share reached 75% by the end of the decade. Today, the wireless company serves about 70 million subscribers, proving its dominance not only in supporting mobile coverage but also in offering fixed telephony and broadband internet services. Indeed, Telcel’s rapid growth was a result of the network’s aggressive marketing strategies to meet the diverse communication needs of the general Mexican population.

Telcel’s parent company, América Móvil, is lauded as the fourth largest mobile network operator in the world, serving more than 265 million subscribers with all its market combined. The telecommunications company currently owns and controls wireless service providers in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the United States, América Móvil operates under the mobile brands TracFone, Straight Talk, and Net10.

Besides offering postpaid plans, Telcel provides prepaid plans specifically geared for mobile users who prefer contract-free services or for would-be subscribers with low credit profiles. Such option has further catapulted Telcel’s popularity as more subscribers take advantage of such cost-effective platform, which does not require unnecessary activation fees and pre-termination penalties.

Telcel Prepaid Refills

Mobile users may replenish their prepaid account by purchasing Telcel Amigo prepaid top-ups from customer service centers or authorized Telcel distributors located in key areas in Mexico. One may also purchase Telcel Amigo top-up cards from participating banks, department stores, and retail outlets, or subscribers may recharge through bank ATMs.
