Smart Mobile (Cambodia)

Smart Mobile, a cellular brand launched in Cambodia in March 2009, is the eighth wireless service provider to enter one of the highly competitive mobile markets in Asia. Smart Mobile is owned by Latelz Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Cyprus-based Timeturns Holdings, which owns and operates mobile telecommunications services across Asia and Africa.

In 2009, Smart Mobile’s network coverage extended to 13 provinces, which include Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kompong Speu, Sihanouk, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Poi Pet, Kompong Cham, Kandal, Kompong Chhnang, Kompong Thom, Prey Veang, and Svay Reang. And in 2010, Smart continued to expand its covered areas by deploying wireless mobile infrastructures in Kep, Kampot, Takeo, Kratie and Pursat.

Just like other wireless service providers operating in Cambodia, Smart Mobile offers local and international mobile calling, text messaging (SMS), multimedia messaging (MMS), and value added services at competitive rates. Also, Smart Mobile subscribers with internet-capable mobile handsets may access the web using the cellular network’s GPRS or EDGE coverage. Smart mobile also offers international roaming for frequent travelers anywhere in the world with the cellular network’s roaming partners.

Smart Mobile Prepaid Plans

Smart6

Smart prepaid subscribers who spend more for airtime and SMS may choose Smart6 because of the lower per-minute calling rates and unlimited SMS included in the prepaid package. On-net calls (Smart-to-Smart) are charged a flat rate of $0.06 per six minutes, while calls to other networks cost $0.06 per minute. As for calls to special international destinations, each minute of talk time is priced at $0.07.

Smart Mobile’s text messaging service (SMS) costs $0.06 for 24 hours of unlimited on-net text messaging, while text messages sent to other local networks and to international destinations are charged $0.06 per SMS. Multimedia messages (MMS), whether sent within the network, to other networks, or to international destinations, cost a flat rate of $0.06 per MMS.

To switch to the Smart6 prepaid plan, Smart customers may dial *201*3# from their mobile phone, after which an activation fee of $0.50 will be deducted from the prepaid account. However, one needs to note that switching between plans deactivates the existing bonuses included in the current plan. Smart6 has a 30-day validity period, after which a renewal is required.

International destinations with the cheapest calling rates include France, U.S.A, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Brunei, India, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Russia.

XtraLong!

By dialing *201*2# from their cellular phone, Smart prepaid users can switch to the XtraLong! prepaid plan, which requires a minimum credit balance of $2 to activate. With this prepaid package, one enjoys cheaper calling rates of $0.05 per minute for on-net calls and $0.07 per minute for calls to other networks and to special international destinations. All calls are charged on a per-15-second basis.

Smart Mobile’s XtraLong! prepaid tariff is ideal for frequent SMS users. By making outgoing and receiving incoming calls for at least one year, subscribers will receive 10 free on-net SMS every day. With such bonus, Smart prepaid users continue to enjoy the wireless network’s prepaid services for longer periods.

Mobile Internet

Standard Mobile Internet

This pay-as-you-go internet package entitles subscribers mobile data worth $0.01 per 100 kilobyte (KB).

Fresh Internet Packages

With Fresh Internet Packages, Smart prepaid users may choose 50MB ($1), 400MB ($3), 500MB ($5), 2,000MB ($10), 5,000MB ($20), or 12,000MB ($40) of data access. The 50MB and 400MB options have a validity period of 15 days, while higher data plans are valid for 31 days.

Text Messaging (SMS)

With the text messaging service, Smart Mobile charges $0.01 per SMS sent within the network, while each message sent to other networks costs $0.05. International text messaging costs a flat rate of $0.10 per text message sent.

Smart Mobile Prepaid Refills

Smart Mobile prepaid refills are available in Smart retail locations nationwide. Smart customers may also purchase Smart prepaid top-ups from authorized dealers of from participating outlets across Cambodia. And for international top-ups, Babblebug.com offers Smart prepaid mobile load with recharge denominations of $3, $6, $11, $22, and $55. Babblebug.com accepts credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal as payment options. Although Smart wireless mobile top-ups are purchased in U.S. dollars, subscribers will receive the prepaid load in Cambodia’s equivalent currency.
