Smart (Belize)

Smart is a cellular brand launched by SpeedNet in Belize in March 2005. Since its inception, Smart has become one of the leading telecommunications provider in the island of Belize, growing from its initial market base of 5,000 subscribers in 2006 to more than 100,000 mobile users today. With Smart’s 1XRTT CDMA mobile infrastructure, customers are guaranteed reliable cellular services anywhere within the service provider’s coverage area.

During its initial operations, Smart offered basic wireless cellular services such as mobile calling, short messaging service (SMS), and value added services. In October 2005, Smart moved forward with offering long distance telephone service, bringing its subscribers closer to the world.

In 2006, the telecom provider established its first Third Generation (3G) infrastructure through its CDMA network, providing subscribers full internet access on their mobile phones at higher speeds of up to 153 Kbps. With such improvement in Smart’s cellular services, mobile users are now able to send picture messages, send emails, and download data more efficiently within the network’s covered areas.

Besides providing lower mobile usage rates, Smart also offers per-second charging of mobile calls in both prepaid and postpaid plans. Also, Smart features selected postpaid plans with no overage charges by allowing the mobile user to replenish his or her postpaid account with a Smart prepaid top-up refill.

Smart also takes pride in its very affordable prepaid plan rates. With no monthly bills and long-term lock-in periods required, Smart’s prepaid plan appeals widely to the general population in Belize. However, the cellular provider has yet to implement the international roaming option to its prepaid services.

Mobile Calling Rates

During off-peak hours (weekdays, from 8 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.; and from Friday, 8 p.m. to Monday, 5:59 a.m.), mobile calls are charged (Belize Dollar) $0.64 per minute, while airtime during peak hours costs $0.80 per minute. Smart prepaid calling plans already include caller ID, call-waiting, call forwarding, 3-way calling, and voicemail.

Text Messaging (SMS)

Smart Prepaid offers SMS bundles for more affordable text messaging options. Starting at $3.05, one enjoys a bundle of 50 text messages. Higher denominations include $5.10 with 100 SMS, $10.20 with 250 SMS, and $12.25 with 400 SMS. Without subscribing to the SMS bundles, one would spend more at $0.18 per text message sent. Thus frequent SMS users are encouraged to purchase text messaging bundles for cheaper per-SMS rates.

Other Services

For MMS and data access services, Smart prepaid subscribers may dial *667 for updated bundle options and rates. One may also dial 280-1010 for additional information on other Smart prepaid services.

Smart Prepaid Top-up Refills

Smart top-up cards may be purchased from Smart retail channels, Smart showrooms, and Smart Prepaid Card agents located throughout the island of Belize. Prepaid subscribers may also purchase Smart prepaid refills on Babblebug.com with credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal as payment options. Babblebug.com offers Smart prepaid mobile recharge top-upsranging from US$5 to US$70; and upon purchase, the wireless airtime refills are converted to Belize dollars.
