Reliance (India)

A flagship company of India’s Reliance Group, Reliance Communications Limited is a mobile network operator based in Mumbai, India. The telecommunications company, commonly referred to as RCOM, provides pan-Indian network coverage with the telecom’s cellular, fixed telephony, and data services.

Reliance Communications is the 16^th largest wireless operator in the world with more than 128 million customers to date. Reliance Globalcom, a division of RCOM, controls the world’s most expansive undersea cable system with about 65,000 kilometers of submarine cable wires that support RCOM’s telecommunications services.

In 2010, Reliance was awarded the license to operate 3G infrastructures across 13 telecom circles in India, covering Assam, Orissa, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, North East, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal. In the same year, Reliance reportedly pulled out of the broadband wireless access (BWA) bidding, focusing instead on wireless internet through the network’s 3G technology, and later on, through LTE technology as planned.

Reliance Communications is expected to launch its first 4G LTE infrastructures in December 2011, promising much faster internet speeds. With 4G, mobile users can upload and download data, stream videos, and transfer multimedia files seamlessly within Reliance’s 4G network.

Just like other mobile operators in India, Reliance Communications also provides prepaid services besides postpaid plans, enabling customers to access the network’s cutting-edge technology without the need for contract sign-ups and monthly bills.

Get Started Kit

New Reliance subscribers may purchase a starter SIM, priced at (Rupees) Rs49, with lifetime validity. Local calls, whether on-net or off-net, cost Re0.99 per minute, while all STD calls cost Rs1.50 per minute. Subscribers on national roaming are charged Re1.00 per minute for all incoming and local outgoing calls, while all STD calls while on roaming still cost Rs1.50 per minute.

On the other hand, international calls to USA, Canada, New Zealand, and fixed lines in Australia are more affordable at Rs6.40 per minute, while calls to mobile phones in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Europe, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and UAE cost Rs10 per minute.

Text messaging costs Re1.00/SMS to local networks, Rs1.50/SMS to national numbers, and Rs5.00/SMS to international destinations.

Other Prepaid Plans

Depending on the customer’s calling needs, one may choose from the following prepaid plans: Simply Pay per Second (1paise per second for STD and local calls), Simply Pay per Minute (50paise per minute for STD and local calls), and Simply Pay per Call (Rs1.20 every 3 minutes of STD and local calls).

3G Mobile Internet Prepaid Plans

Pay-As-You-Go

Prepaid users who use less mobile data may opt-in for the pay-as-you-go option, priced at 10paise per kilobyte (KB) of data.

Volume-Based Prepaid Data Plans

For heavier internet usage, Reliance’s volume-based data plans offer a more flexible range of data options: 125MB (Rs96), 100MB (Rs97), 250MB (Rs198), 500MB (Rs397), 1GB (RS649), 2GB (Rs749), 3GB (Rs899), 5GB (Rs1,199), 10GB (Rs848, available only in West Bengal and Kolkatta), 10GB (Rs1,499), 15GB (Rs1,799), and 21GB (Rs2,100). Except the Rs96 denomination, which has an expiry period of seven days, all volume-based data plans expire after 30 days.

Monthly Data Plans

Monthly data plans are also available in denominations of Rs100 (100MB), Rs199 (250MB), and Rs96 (125MB), all of which have an expiration period of 30 days. Unlike the volume-based data plans, the monthly packages charge 10 paise per 10 KB of overage data.

Prepaid subscribers may purchase Reliance prepaid top-ups from the network’s flagship stores and outlets located across the service provider’s covered telecom circles. One can also buy Reliance prepaid refills from authorized retailers, dealers, and outlets in major areas across India.
