Oi (Brazil)

Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Oi (formerly Telemar) is a subsidiary of Tele Norte Holding Company (TNL). With its inception in 2002, Oi is the first mobile network operator to establish GSM mobile infrastructures in Brazil.  In 2007, the rebranding of Telemar to Oi resulted in the unification of the telecom provider’s mobile, fixed telephony, and broadband internet service under “Oi” as the new brand name. In official terms; however, Oi is still legally known as Telemar Norte Leste S.A.

During its initial stage, Oi was given the license to provide only voice, data, and interstate long-distance calling services. Later on, the communications provider continued to gain a major foothold in the Brazilian telephony market by adding international long-distance, roaming, and fixed telephony services.

In 2007, Oi continued to expand its mobile service by acquiring a license to deploy GSM infrastructures in Sao Paulo, resulting in the wireless network’s acquisition of Amazônia Celular. And in 2009, Oi’s acquisition of Brazil Telecom further catapulted the mobile network’s dominance in the Brazilian market, serving 41.5 million subscribers to date.

Today, Oi offers both postpaid and prepaid mobile services to Brazil’s growing subscriber base, with the prepaid service gaining further momentum as more mobile users shift to prepaid services because of the simplicity of pay-as-you-go charging schemes, requiring no contract-based service plans or regular phone bills.

Oi Prepaid Plans

Oi prepaid plans slightly vary among Brazilian States. For a more detailed list of products and services offered in specific states, one may visit www.novaoi.oi.com.br. To provide a glimpse of what the mobile network provides in terms of its prepaid service, the information below features Oi prepaid plans offered in the state of Sao Paulo, Amazonas, and Rio de Janeiro.

Sao Paulo

In Sao Paulo, airtime costs R$1.53 per minute for calls to Oi mobile numbers, fixed lines, and other networks. Text messaging, on the other hand, costs R$0.42 per SMS, while each multimedia message (MMS) containing a sound or image file costs R$2.49. Mobile internet browsing using GPRS is charged R$0.008 per kilobyte (KB) of data, while WAP browsing costs R$0.30 per minute.

Amazonas

With the Oi Any Time Card (Oi Cartao Qualquer Hora), one enjoys cheaper mobile calling to Oi, off-net mobile numbers, and fixed lines at a flat rate of only R$1.24 per minute.

For Oi prepaid users with specific mobile calling patterns, the Oi Low Rate Card (Oi Cartao Tarifa Reduzida) is available with four options to choose from, providing mobile users more affordable calling rates at a specific period indicated on the prepaid phone card. A Low Rate Card may include either of the following off-peak calling options: Morning (8 a.m.-12 p.m.), Early Afternoon (12 p.m.-4 p.m.), Night (4 p.m.-8 p.m.), or Super-Night (8 p.m.-12 a.m.).

With the Oi Low Rate Card, calling during reduced-rate hours to Oi mobile numbers and fixed lines costs R$0.68/min, while calls to other mobile operators or fixed lines cost R$0.93 per minute. During normal hours, mobile calls are charged R$1.39/min to Oi mobile phones and Oi fixed lines, while calling to other network operators costs R$1.56 per minute.

Rio de Janeiro (Capital Area)

The Oi Any Time Card is widely popular in Rio de Janeiro for its affordable flat calling rate, in which each minute of on-net and off-net talk time costs only R$1.54 at any time of the day.

As for subscribers whose calling frequencies and schedules vary per day, the Oi Low Rate Card provides lower mobile calling rates during reduced-rate hours as indicated on the phone card. One may choose a phone card that offers affordable airtime in the morning (8 a.m.-12 p.m.), late midday (12 p.m.-4 p.m.), night (4 p.m.-8 p.m.), or late night (8 p.m.-12 a.m.).

In Rio de Janeiro, cellular calls to Oi mobile phones and Oi landlines cost R$0.79 per minute during reduced-rate hours and R$1.95 per minute during normal hours. Calls to fixed lines and cellular phones on other networks cost R$1.02 per minute during reduced-rate hours and R$2.12 per minute during normal hours.

In many states, subscribers who run out of prepaid credits on their prepaid account may request R$4 worth of advanced mobile recharge. The refill amount, plus applicable tax, will be deducted from the account upon the next top-up. The advanced credit may be used for on-net and off-net mobile calling, long distance calling, sending text messages, and mobile internet access.

With Oi prepaid plans, basic calling services such as caller ID, call conferencing, and call waiting are already included.

Oi Prepaid Top-up Refills

Oi offers different mobile recharge channels from which subscribers may purchase Oi prepaid refills. One may visit Oi retail stores located across Brazilian states, or Oi customers may also visit any bank where Oi prepaid phone cards are available. Also, Oi customers may purchase Oi prepaid load on Babblebug.com using a credit card, debit card, or PayPal account to replenish minutes on their prepaid account.
