Neo GSM (Kazakhstan)

Launched in Kazakhstan in the first quarter of 2007, Neo GSM is a mobile brand owned by the GSM-based cellular provider, Mobile Telecom Service. The cellular network supports voice, messaging, and data services to roughly 7% of the country’s mobile market.

Neo GSM, with its current subscriber base, is the smallest telecommunications provider in Kazakhstan; but despite its relatively small coverage, the network enjoyed more than 800% growth rate within its first year of operations, acquiring 0.7 million subscribers with such short span of time. Today, Neo’s coverage reaches about one third of the country’s entire population.

By the end of the decade, Tele2, a European telecom provider, moved forward with the acquisition of 51% of Neo’s shares, with an option to buy the remaining 49% within 5 years after the initial acquisition, which was finalized at a reported amount of USD77 million. In 2011, Tele2 re-launched Neo as a brand fortified with aggressive expansion plans, which include tripling the number of base stations by the end of 2011 and achieving 74% mobile coverage throughout the country’s entire population.

Today, Neo GSM has about 1.5 million subscribers and operates in 251 cities across 14 provinces in Kazakhstan. The reported expansion plan aims to cover areas in Almaty, Aktobe, Astana, and Western Kazakhstan, among many others.

Neo GSM Prepaid Airtime Plans

Просто 5 (Just 5)

The Just 5 prepaid package delivers (Tenge) KZT5 per minute of on-net calls and KZT25 per minute of calls to landline and other operators within Kazakhstan.

Не Молчи! (Do Not be Quiet)

This prepaid package entitles subscribers a flat on-net or off-net calling rate of KZT9 per minute after the first minute of airtime, which costs KZT18.

Абыр-дабыр (Abyroi-dabyr)

The Abyroi-dabyr offer provides cheaper all-network airtime rate of only KZT5 per minute after the first minute (KZT27) of each call.

Mobile users who make frequent calls to international networks may opt-in for the Whole World prepaid package, which includes a starting balance worth KZT2,200. On this plan, calling to off-net numbers, landlines, and any international destination costs only KZT32 per minute. On-net calls, on the other hand, cost KZT16 per minute.

Neo GSM Prepaid Data Access and Messaging Rates

Data access through GPRS costs KZT25 per 1MB of data, while WAP access costs KZT12 per 100KB. Data access on this plan is charged in blocks of 10KB, while airtime calls are billed per second. Also, each on-net SMS costs only KZT5, while SMS sent to other networks costs KZT12. One may also send MMS at a rate of KZT15 per message.
