MTN (Sudan)

MTN Sudan, a subsidiary of MTN Group Limited, provides GSM-based telecommunications services across the African country of Sudan. From local calling to broadband data to international roaming, MTN’s broad range of communications services reaches more than 6 million subscribers or an equivalent of about 28 percent mobile market share.

The mobile network’s history dates back to September 2004, when Bashair Telecom, MTN’s legal company name, acquired a license to operate GSM infrastructures in the country. A year later, MTN opened its cellular coverage to the public, supporting 2G and 3G coverage.

With more than 8,500 points of sale and a market worth of more than 650 million dollars, MTN is heralded as one of the largest telecom providers in Sudan. In other parts of the world, MTN Group operates in more than 23 countries in the Middle East and Africa, serving an aggregate subscriber base of more than 150 million.

Today, MTN Sudan continues to grow with its aggressive marketing strategies, with a goal of reaching a subscriber base of 9 million, or an equivalent of 35 percent market share, by the end of December 2012.

ALO

The ALO package by MTN delivers a flat per-minute rate of 7 piastres for on-net and off- net calls, while international airtime costs SDG1 per minute. On the other hand, each national SMS, whether on-net or off-net, costs 4 piastres, while each text message sent to international destinations costs 25 piastres. One may also send local multimedia messages for only 15 piastres per MMS.

Browsing the internet through MTN’s GPRS network costs only 1 piastre per 10Kb of data.

Hala

Subscribers who place calls less frequently may opt-in for the Hala prepaid package because calls are charged per second. On-net calls are charged SDG0.0023 per second, while off-net calls cost SDG0.0030 per second. Meanwhile local SMS, international SMS, and MMS are charged the same rate with that of the ALO prepaid plan. With Hala, GPRS browsing costs SDG0.003 per Kb of data.

All prices quoted above are subject to 20 percent VAT (value-added tax).

Hala Prepaid Bundles

Hala also offers usage-specific bundles, which include SMS Bundle 1 (60 all-network SMS, SDG2), SMS Bundle 2 (100 all-network SMS, SDG3), MMS Bundle 1 (20 on-net MMS, SDG2), and MMS Bundle 2 (50 on-net MMS, SDG4). For international bundles, one may logon to http://www.mtn.sd. All bundles have an expiry period of 30 days.

MTN Prepaid Refills

To replenish airtime minutes, mobile users may purchase MTN prepaid refill cards or electronic top-ups from MTN stores, authorized dealers, and selected retail outlets located across Sudan. For international recharge options, Babblebug.net offers MTN prepaid load denominations of US$5, US$10, US$20, US$30, US$40, US$50, US$60, and US$70, which will be forwarded to the prepaid account in Sudanese pound.
