Movistar (Mexico)

Movistar Mexico is a mobile brand owned by Telefónica México, a GSM-based communications provider that supports voice, data, long-distance, roaming, and other value-added services. The cellular network’s GSM 1900MHz and 3.5G infrastructures operate in more than 700 towns and 60 major cities in all Mexican states.

Telefónica established its operations in Mexico in 2001, now operating under the brand name Movistar. Since then, the mobile network, using only cutting-edge digital technology, has steadily acquired a significant share in the national mobile market. Today, Movistar boasts more than 21 million subscribers in the country alone. With such performance, Telefónica has been recognized by Fortune (ESO) as one of the world’s most admired companies.

The Movistar brand is owned and controlled by Telefónica Móviles, a communications company based in Spain, where the network serves more than 22 million customers. Such magnitude has earned the company the top spot in the country’s cellular industry, with a market share of 48%. On a global scale, Telefónica Móviles operates wireless networks in 26 countries, 14 of which are in Latin America, where Telefónica competes with América Móvil.

Today, Telefónica México continues to provide telecommunications coverage through postpaid and prepaid platforms. In other countries, the company also supports landline telephony, broadband internet, and television services.

Movistar Prepaid Airtime Plans

Simple Prepaid (National)

The Prepago® Simple (Simple Prepaid) package, when recharged with at least (Mexican dollar) $120 worth of prepaid top-up, offers an affordable flat calling rate of $1.98 per minute to local and national on-net numbers, local and national fixed lines, and local and national off-net mobile numbers. The same rate also applies to mobile calls to the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

However, when the prepaid refill does not reach the required amount, the same calls will be charged slightly higher, at $2.98 per minute. With this plan, calls to NEA cities cost $3 per minute. As for text messaging, each SMS sent to any destination costs $1.09. The required $120 balance may be accumulated to maintain the $1.98-per-minute rate.

Simple Prepaid (Border)

By contrast, this prepaid package charges a  slightly lower rate (required top-up of $120) of $1.89  per minute to all local and national mobile or fixed-line numbers, whether on-net or off-net. Calls to the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico are also charged the same rate. However, the same calls will cost $2.85 per minute if the accumulated prepaid refill does not reach $120. Talk time rate to NEA cities, as compared to that of Simple Prepaid (National), costs lower at $2.87 per minute. Each SMS is also charged lower at $1.04 per message.

With the Simple prepaid package, mobile users may register up to two on-net numbers for free local and national calls. Subscribers may dial *343 from their mobile phone to register the preferred mobile numbers.

Movistar Prepaid Internet Plans

For time-based usage, subscribers may choose the hourly ($9/hour, 40MB), daily ($19/day, 100MB), weekly ($99/week, 400MB), or monthly option ($199/month, 1GB). Overage internet usage will be charged $0.02 per MB of data.

Movistar Prepaid Refills

To replenish prepaid airtime, subscribers may purchase Movistar prepaid top-ups from Movistar flagship stores and participating dealers and retail outlets throughout Mexico. One may also buy Movistar top-up refills from Bancomer, Scotiabank-Inverlat, and HSBC banks or through automated teller machines (ATMs).

For international load refills, Babblebug.com offers Movistar prepaid recharge denominations ranging from US$5 to US$70. The purchased prepaid refill, which will be converted to an equivalent amount in Mexican peso, will be forwarded to the prepaid account instantly with no PIN required.
