Owned by Telefónica Móviles Guatemala S.A., Movistar is a cellular brand that provides CDMA and GSM/GPRS coverage in the Central American country of Guatemala since 1999, when Telefónica Guatemala launched its first CDMA network after acquiring the entire operations of Paysandú S.A. in 1998.

As a mobile brand, Movistar was established in Spain in 1995. Movistar’s parent company, Telefónica Móviles, is the largest wireless carrier in Spain, serving more than 22 million subscribers or an equivalent of about 42% of the country’s mobile market share. In 2005, Movistar became a global brand after Telefónica Móviles acquired the entire Bellsouth operations in South America.

In Guatemala, Telefónica Móviles further increased its dominance with the acquisition of Bellsouth Guatemala in 2005, the same year when Telefónica Móviles formally launched Movistar in the South American market, where the cellular brand also competes with TIGO (Millicom International) and Claro (América Móvil).

In 2009, Movistar continued to strengthenits technological lead by deploying state-of-the art UMTS/HSDPA infrastructures, providing faster mobile internet browsing and download speeds. Today, Movistar provides local and international mobile calling, data, and roaming services to its millions of subscribers. Movistar also provides 24/7 customer service through the wireless network’s call center based in El Salvador.

Movistar Prepaid Plans

Habla Mas

With this prepaid package, Movistar subscribers enjoy a local calling rate of (Guatemalan Quetzal) Q0.60 per minute. Also, calls to the United States are charged the same rate of Q0.60 per minute. As for text messaging, each SMS sent to any domestic destinations costs only Q0.30.

Although Habla Mas offers the lowest anytime calling rates, mobile users on this plan are not eligible to receive promotional rates applicable to the Atoda Hora prepaid package.

To subscribe to Habla Mas, one may send the keyword “HABLA” to 700.

A Toda Hora

Mobile users who wish to receive promotional bonuses regularly may opt-in for the A Toda Hora prepaid plan. Although calling rates to local destinations and to the United States cost higher at Q1.98 per minute, mobile users regularly receive bonuses that double or triple their prepaid account’s existing airtime.

Movistar Prepaid Internet Packages

Movistar subscribers may subscribe to Movistar prepaid internet plans worth Q5 (50MB, 4-hour expiry), Q10 (75MB, 1-day expiry), Q50 (500MB, 7-day expiry), or Q75 (1GB, 15-day expiry) by sending the respective keywords “FOUR,” “Mdia,” “MSEMANA,” or “MQUINCENA” to 700.

With Movistar prepaid plans, basic calling features such as voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, and call conferencing are free of charge.

Movistar Prepaid Refills

To recharge mobile airtime minutes, subscribers may purchase Movistar prepaid top-ups from Movistar stores, retail locations, and affiliated banks located across Guatemala. For international airtime refills, one may visit Babblebug.com and purchase Movistar prepaid load denominations ranging from US$5 to US$70. Babblebug.com accepts credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal as modes of payment. Once purchased, the Movistar prepaid mobile recharge will be converted to Guatemala’s equivalent currency, the Guatemalan Quetzal.
