Movistar (Colombia)

Movistar is a mobile network operator owned by Telefónica Móviles, a Spanish telecommunications company that operates cellular network infrastructures in Spain and in Latin America. In Colombia, Movistar started its first operations in 2004 after Telefónica Móviles rebranded Bellsouth, a mobile network operator whose operations in Colombia and in other countries were sold to the Spanish telecommunications company.

Today, Movistar is the second largest cellular provider in Colombia, offering nationwide coverage and serving around 30% of the total market share in the country’s cellular communications market. In Spain, Telefónica Móviles is the largest wireless service provider, serving more than 22 million subscribers or about 42% of the country’s market base.

As a cellular brand, Movistar has existed since 1995, when the mobile network deployed and operated its first digital GSM network infrastructures. On a global scale, Movistar serves more than 90 million subscribers in 15 countries, which include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

In Colombia, Movistar provides both GSM and CDMA coverage, offering postpaid and prepaid voice, text, and data packages at competitive prices. However, Movistar’s prepaid tariffs and packages bring more appeal to the Colombian market, whose preferences are more geared toward pay-as-you-go services because such option requires no monthly bills and yearly contracts, providing more freedom in terms of predictability and economy of mobile usage expenses.

Movistar prepaid Plans

Movistar Mobile Calling Plans

Movistar prepaid subscribers may choose either of the two prepaid calling options: the 9 Preferidosor the 1 Preferido Ilimitado voice package. Movistar customers on the 9 Preferidos plan may register up to 9 special numbers, which may be a combination of mobile or fixed line numbers on any domestic network operator. Calling to preferred numbers only costs (Colombian pesos) $269 per minute. Although registration is free of charge, changing or removal of the preferred numbers costs $1,200. To register, one only needs to dial #001 or 611#. With Movistar 9 Preferidos, subscribers also enjoy promotional days, more detailed information of which is available on http://www.movistar.co.

Movistar subscribers who frequently make outgoing calls to one mobile number may choose the Movistar 1 Preferido Ilimitado calling package, which offers free talk time during the first five minutes of every call made to the special number. From the sixth minute onward, the mobile call will be charged a rate of $324 per minute. One may dial #001 to register to the package, which costs $3,990, with a validity period of 30 days. Deleting or changing the registered preferred number before the 30-day expiry period costs $9,900.

Movistar Prepaid SMS

Movistar prepaid users may opt-in for the network’s pay-as-you-go text messaging (SMS) service or choose the more cost-effective Movistar prepaid SMS packages. With pay-as-you-go, each on-net text message costs $96, while each SMS sent to other network operators and to international destinations costs $207 and $238, respectively.

Frequent prepaid SMS users may choose Movistar on-net SMS packages starting with 10SMS/day, which costs $649. Higher denominations include 20SMS/day ($999) and 50SMS/day ($1,990). Also, one may register to the 10 daily off-net text messaging bundle, which sells for $999. To register to the on-net SMS plan, one only needs to send “10,” “20,” or “50” to 5563. For the off-net SMS package, one may send “T” to 5563.

Movistar Prepaid Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)

Today, Movistar prepaid subscribers may already enjoy sending multimedia messages to anyone in Colombia. Unlike Movistar postpaid plans, which charge $14 per KB of MMS data sent, Movistar prepaid MMS only costs $580 per message sent. Receiving MMS, on the other hand, is free of charge.

Movistar Prepaid Mobile Internet Plans

Movistar offers varying prepaid internet rates for specific types of data access such as email, chat, social media, and web browsing. On a per day charging scheme, data access costs $900 for mobile email; $900 for mobile chat; $1,500 for email and chat combined; $1900 for access to social networking sites, email, and chat; and $2,900 for complete web browsing.

A per-week prepaid internet option is also available, selling at $4,500 for mobile email; $4,500 for mobile chat; $6,900 for email and chat; $8,900 for social networking, email, and chat; and $13,900 for web browsing.

For frequent internet users, the Movistar prepaid monthly internet package is the most cost effective plan, which sells for $14,900 for email; $14,900 for chat; $22,900 for email and chat; $28,900 for social networking, email, and chat; and $44,900 for complete web browsing.

Movistar Prepaid Refills

In Colombia, Movistar prepaid recharge cards are available in prepaid load denominations of $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, and $50,000. Movistar prepaid subscribers may also replenish their airtime by purchasing Movistar electronic prepaid top-ups from Movistar stores and participating dealers and retail outlets.
