Mobitel (Sri Lanka)Mobitel (Pvt.) Ltd. is a mobile network operator that provides GSM cellular services in Sri Lanka with its 2G, 3G, and 3.5G wireless infrastructures. The cellular network provides wireless broadband internet, local and international voice, and roaming services through its postpaid and prepaid platforms. The inception of Mobitel in 1993 made it the second entrant to Sri Lanka’s previously untapped communications market. The network, which began as a joint partnership between Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and Telstra, initially offered analog AMPS and TDMA coverage. In 2002, SLT confirmed its full acquisition of the mobile network, leading the way to Mobitel’s rise in the local telecommunications industry. In 2004, Mobitel joined the bandwagon when it launched its first GSM operations utilizing the 800MHz and 1800MHz bands. The infrastructures already supported EDGE and GPRS technology, which enabled subscribers to browse the internet at modest speeds. In the years that followed, Mobile has adopted the faster 3G and 3.5G technologies, ushering in a new era in wireless broadband connectivity. In May 2011, Mobitel became the first cellular network in South Asia to test 4G networks, which promise even much faster data connectivity to mobile users. Despite all its efforts to keep its network infrastructures on par with the recent technologies, Mobitel maintains its appeal to its growing subscriber base because of its cost-effective prepaid plans, further increasing its market share in the Sri Lankan mobile market.

Mobitel Prepaid PlansWith Mobitel, subscribing to a prepaid connection is easy; customers may visit any authorized retail outlet, while tourists entering the country may purchase a SIM card at the arrival lounge of the Bandaranayke International Airport. Basic Tariff PlanThe Basic Tariff Plan offers competitive airtime and messaging rates, charging only Rs1 for each minute of on-net calls, while talk time to other networks costs Rs2 per minute. On the other hand, each SMS costs Rs1, while each MMS costs Rs5. Customers with internet-ready handsets may browse the web at a rate of Rs1 per 1000KB of data. To switch to the Basic Tariff Plan, subscribers may dial #111# on their handsets and follow instructions. With Mobitel, basic calling features such as caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and call hold come at no extra charge. Mobitel Prepaid RefillsTo replenish Mobitel airtime minutes, subscribers may purchase Mobitel prepaid refill cards or electronic top-ups from authorized dealers and Mobitel retail outlets located throughout Sri Lanka.
