Founded in 2000, Idea Cellular is a wireless communications provider based in Mumbai, covering 22 telecom circles across the country with the network’s GSM infrastructures. Idea Cellular, also popularly known as Idea, is a part of the Aditya Birla Group, one of India’s largest multinational firms, with operations in about 26 countries. In 2007, Idea Cellular went public and was listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

In India, Idea Cellular is the third largest mobile network operator in terms of revenue and subscriber base, serving over 93 million customers as of May 2011. Since 2010, the cellular network’s revenue has continued to grow with its improved national long distance and international long distance services.

A year after Idea received a license to operate new 3G infrastructures in India, the mobile network commenced its 3G operations in the telecom circles of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Goa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh (East) and Uttar Pradesh (West). Idea’s 3G infrastructures, which supports video calling and seamless high-speed internet browsing, now reaches about 200 towns across the covered telecom circles in India. By the end of 2012, Idea’s 3G coverage, with the present expansion rate, will have penetrated a total of 4,000 towns across the country.

PSB Card

The PSB Card, priced at (Rupees) Rs15 with lifetime validity, charges a lower rate for Idea-to-Idea mobile calling. For both local and national calls, on-net airtime costs only 1paise per second, while calls to other networks are charged 1.2paise per second.

Text messaging, on the other hand, costs Rs1 per SMS sent to local networks, Rs1.5 per SMS sent to national destinations, and Rs5 per SMS sent to international numbers.

Special Promotional Plan

Mobile users who need more talk time may subscribe to the Special Promotional Plan, which costs Rs19 and includes Rs5 worth of included airtime minutes. Once the allocation is consumed, each minute of mobile calls to Idea numbers, local or national, will be charged 1paise per second, and each minute of airtime to other networks, whether mobile or fixed, will cost 1.2paise per second. Text messages, on the other hand, are charged Rs1 per local SMS, Rs1.5 per national SMS, and Rs5 per international SMS.

Idea Prepaid Mobile Internet

Mobile users with internet-ready handsets may choose three prepaid recharge options to access Idea’s mobile data service. The Rs299 prepaid internet pack, for example, delivers 5GB of web data valid for 15 days.

Unlimited internet plans are also available in denominations of Rs399 and Rs1999 with validity periods of 30 days and 180 days, respectively. However, Idea’s fair usage policy throttles the browsing and download speeds once the 5GB cap is reached.
