The network is part of the 16 major mobile telecommunications providers managed by Etisalat UAE, the parent company. Since its inception in 1976, Etisalat has remained committed in terms of keeping its overall telecommunications infrastructure on par with the latest improvements in mobile technology. In 1994, the mobile network was the first to introduce GSM technology in the Middle East. And in 2006, it too pioneered the implementation of 3G infrastructure in the region to provide customers faster data connection speeds and better call quality. Etisalat UAE now operates subsidiaries in other parts of the Middle East, which includes, among many others, Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Pakistan, and India, making the network provider the sixth largest company in the Middle East in terms of revenue. Also, this Etisalat prepaid package allows the mobile user to choose between per-second and per-minute charging schemes. With the Per-Minute plan option, on-net calls cost AFN2 per minute, while off-net calls cost AFN5 per minute. Each on-net SMS costs AFN2, and off-net SMS, AFN5. On the other hand, the Per-Second Mubarak prepaid option costs prepaid subscribers AFN2.5 per minute of airtime for calls to other Etisalat users, while calls to other networks still cost AFN5 per minute. Both on-net and off-net SMS cost AFN2.5 for each text message. With the Mubarak prepaid plan, each multimedia message (MMS) sent costs AFN15, while GPRS usage is charged AFN10 per MB of data. Subscribing to GPRS and MMS services charges a one-time subscription fee of AFN100 with the Mubarak prepaid tariff. New Etisalat subscribers may choose their plan according to their calling needs. Upon placing the first call with their new SIM card, an IVR automatically instructs to press either 1 for per-minute charging option or 2 for per-second charging. Each Etisalat Mubarak SIM card costs AFN75 with an initial credit of AFN25.
