Entel (Bolivia)

Launched in Bolivia in December 1965, Entel is a state-owned telecommunications provider offering landline, mobile, and broadband internet services to business establishments and individuals across the Latin American state. The company was under direct management by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Civil Aviation from 1966 to 1995, after which Entel moved forward with its privatization, with Telecom Italia owning 50% of Entel’s shares.

In 2008, the Bolivian government issued a decree declaring the state’s efforts to nationalize its vital establishments in the country, which included Entel’s entire operations. Thus Telecom Italia’s 50% share was once again transferred back to the Bolivian Government, which now owns 97% of Entel’s shares.

Today, Entel dominates the long-distance, mobile, and internet market in Bolivia, further materializing the network’s efforts to provide full coverage even in the state’s rural and less developed areas.

Entel offers both postpaid and prepaid plans to its growing subscriber base. With Entel’s competitive prepaid rates, the general population now gains access to the network’s mobile services with the simplest pay-as-you-go options without unnecessary fees and long-term commitments. Plus, the per-second billing scheme allows subscribers to manage their mobile usage with ease and predictability of expenses.

Entel Prepaid Plans

Prepaid Basic Plan

With Entel’s Prepaid Basic Plan, one enjoys lower mobile calling rates during off-peak hours. With this plan, specific periods of the day are divided into three categories: peak-hours (daily, from 7 a.m. to 8:59 p.m.), when mobile calls are charged (Boliviano) Bs 1.50 per minute; off-peak hours (daily, from 9 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.), when mobile calling is priced lower at Bs 0.68 per minute; and super off-peak hours (daily, from 12 a.m. to 6:59 a.m.), when airtime is at its lowest rate at only Bs 0.50 per minute. Text messaging (SMS) costs Bs 0.20 per SMS sent.

Plus Prepaid Plan

Compared to the Prepaid Basic Plan, the Plus Prepaid Plan offers slightly lower mobile calling rates even during normal (peak) hours. On this plan, time periods within the day are divided into two sets: normal (peak) hours, which start at 7 a.m. and ends at 9:59 p.m.; and the reduced (off-peak) hours, which starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 6:59 a.m.

The lowest plan, Plus 300, already includes Bs 300 load and entitles the prepaid subscriber a calling rate of Bs 1.40 per minute during peak hours and Bs 0.70 per minute during off-peak hours. With Plus 400, one is entitled Bs 400 of prepaid load, Bs 1.30 per minute of calls during peak hours, and only Bs 0.65 per minute during off-peak hours. The highest plan denomination, Plus 500, contains Bs 500 load and offers the cheapest calling rate of Bs 1.10 per minute during peak hours and Bs 0.55 per minute during off-peak hours. As for text messaging, all Plus Prepaid Plans charge a flat rate of Bs 0.40 per text message sent.

No Limit

Entel subscribers who have a close circle of friends and family members may subscribe to Entel’s No Limit unlimited prepaid plan, which is offered in two options: Par and Group.

With the Par unlimited calling plan, two subscribers may form as one group and only pay Bs 3 per day to maintain their entitlement to unlimited mobile calling. With Group, however, members are charged a monthly membership fee of Bs 60 per month.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to No Limit unlimited calling plan, one needs to dial *123# and follow further instructions to choose the specific plan type. However, any account that does not hold enough prepaid balance during the collections schedule will automatically be removed from the calling group.

MMS and Mobile Internet

Entel subscribers with internet- and MMS-capable phones may access the mobile network’s vast GPRS/EDGE coverage with affordable usage rates. With Entel’s prepaid plans, sending multimedia message costs Bs 0.90/MMS, accessing the internet (via APN int.movil.com.bo) is charged Bs 3.80 per MB of data, and accessing WAP (via APN wap.movil.com.bo) also costs Bs 3.80 per MB of data.

Entel Wireless Prepaid Refill Top-ups

For prepaid top-ups, Entel subscribers may purchase HOLA prepaid recharge cards from retail stores across Bolivia, or they may visit Babblebug.com to purchase online using their credit card, debit card, or Paypal account. Babblebug.com offers Entel prepaid refills ranging from US$5 to US$70. Upon each successful transaction, the Entel mobile recharge is sent to the Entel mobile number and is converted to Bolivia’s equivalent currency.
