Digicel - Haiti
With a total population of 8 million people but with only about 400,000 fixed and mobile subscriptions (recorded as of 2005), Haiti offered a promising haven for Digicel to establish its cutting-edge cellular technology in the Caribbean country. With the mobile network’s agreement with OneFone, Digicel finally acquired a license to operate GSM infrastructures across Haiti in 2005.
Digicel’s penetration to Haiti’s mobile market was anticipated to jumpstart a stiff competition with local providers that operate CDMA and TDMA technologies. Providing 100% GSM coverage, Digicel claims that the technology’s dominance in the global market—about 70%—will push the wireless network’s appeal to its growing customer base.
The Digicel Group, which was initially launched in Jamaica in 2001, now serves 11.5 million subscribers in 32 markets across Central America, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. Today, Digicel operates mobile services in Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Nauru, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, St Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos and Vanuatu.

Digicel Haiti offers Digicel FLEX, the wireless network’s prepaid brand.
Besides offering lower calling on-net rates, Digicel FLEX already includes call
waiting, conference call, incoming number display, call on hold, and call
transfer. Also, incoming calls are free of charge.

Digicel FLEX Tariffs and Rates
For on-net (Digicel-to-Digicel) calling, mobile airtime during the day (Monday-Friday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m.) costs (Gourde) HTG4.70 per minute, while calls in the evening (Monday-Friday, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.) and weekends (Friday midnight to Sunday midnight) cost only HTG3.25 per minute. Calls to other networks, on the other hand, cost HTG5 per minute during the day and HTG4 per minute during nights and weekends.
With Digicel FLEX, sending text messages costs HTG3 per SMS, while sending multimedia messages costs HTG9 per MMS. On the other hand, each text message sent to international destinations cost HTG6.
Digicel customers with internet-capable handsets may browse the internet for only HTG0.3 per KB of data.
Digicel Prepaid Refills
Digicel subscribers may replenish their airtime minutes by purchasing Digicel Flex phone cards from authorized dealers, retailers, hotels, prepaid load sellers, and Digicel stores. One may also purchase Digicel prepaid top-ups on Babblebug.com, which sells Digicel prepaid recharge denominations of US$5, US$10, US$20, US$30, US$40, US$50, US$60, and US$70. Upon purchase, the Digicel prepaid load will be converted to Haiti’s local currency. Babblebug.com accepts credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal as Digicel prepaid refill payment options.
