With about 800,000 residents and an initial mobile penetration of 22%, Guyana is one of the most promising mobile markets where Digicel has successfully established its foothold as a leading provider of telecommunications services. After receiving the license to operate mobile infrastructures in Guyana, Digicel successfully launched its GSM wireless coverage in 2006, providing high-quality local and international voice, data, SMS, and other value-added services.

Digicel Guyana, a mobile network operator owned by the Digicel Group, was established in 2007 after the company’s acquisition of U*Mobile. Today, Digicel Guyana operates GSM infrastructures in the country with a frequency of 900MHz.

As a global company, the Digicel group launched its first operations in Jamaica in 2001. Since then, the wireless provider has expanded to 32 countries and territories, serving more than 11.5 million subscribers. To date, the Digicel Group has invested more than US$1.2 billion in the pan-Caribbean area, making the telecommunications company the fastest growing mobile network in the region.

In Guyana, Digicel offers both postpaid and prepaid services to cater to the subscribers’ individual calling needs and patterns. Also, Digicel offers per-second charging on all local mobile calls, promising up to 33% of savings on mobile airtime usage.

Digicel Prepaid Plans

Subscribers who prefer Digicel’s prepaid services may subscribe to Digicel FLEX, the mobile network’s prepaid brand. With Digicel FLEX, mobile users enjoy free basic calling features such as voicemail, caller ID, call barring, caller ID blocking, call waiting, call hold, and call conferencing. Also, all incoming calls are free of charge.

With Digicel prepaid, on-net calls are priced at (Guyanese dollar) $25.60 per minute during peak hours (Monday to Friday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m.) and only $22.40 per minute during off-peak hours (6 p.m.-6 a.m.). On the other hand, calls to other mobile networks and landlines are charged $32 per minute during peak hours and $28 per minute during off-peak hours.

To obtain specific rates on Digicel’s text messaging, multimedia messaging, and mobile internet services, subscribers may dial 100 from their Digicel mobile phone.

All prices indicated are exclusive of 16% value-added tax (VAT).

Digicel Prepaid Refills

Digicel prepaid subscribers may replenish their airtime minutes by purchasing Digicel prepaid top-ups from Digicel flagship stores, retailers, and participating dealers located nationwide. International top-ups may also be purchased on Babblebug.net, which offers Digicel mobile recharge denominations ranging from US$5 to US$70. Once purchased, the Digicel prepaid refill will be converted to an equivalent amount in Guyana’s local currency. Babblebug.net accepts credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal as Digicel prepaid load payment options.
