Digicel (Fiji)

When Digicel Pacific established its wireless network operations in Fiji in September 2008, the decades-long monopoly controlled by Vodafone in the small Pacific nation had finally ended. With Digicel’s US$70 million investment, Fiji became the 28th market penetrated by the Digicel Group, a telecommunications company that, to date, provides wireless services in 32 countries and territories in Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

The launching of Digicel in Fiji follows prior establishment of the network’s Pacific coverage in Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Today, Digicel provides communications services in other markets, which include Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Nauru, Panama, Samoa, St Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, St. Martin and St. Barts.

The Digicel Group was incorporated in Bermuda in 2001. A few months later, the communications company established its first operations in Bermuda, and later on, expanded toward other countries and territories. Today, Digicel boasts more than 11.5 million subscribers with all its market combined.

In Fiji, Digicel’s network coverage reaches 95% of the nation’s entire population. And although Vodafone still leads the mobile market with more than 60% of the market base, the competitive services and rates offered by Digicel will indeed create a stiff competition in the following years. Also, Digicel’s GPRS and EDGE technology promise to provide customers mobile internet from anywhere within the coverage area. Digicel also offers cost-effective prepaid plans that appeal to many customers who prefer mobile usage on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Digicel Prepaid Plans

Digicel offers one of the most affordable airtime rates with 30-second (equivalent to 1 unit) charging on mobile talk time anywhere within the Digicel Fiji network. On-net calling (Digicel-to-Digicel) is more affordable for only (Fijian Dollar) $0.18 per unit. On the other hand, calls to other domestic destinations and fixed lines are charged $0.20 per unit. For specific rates for calls to international destinations, one may visit http://www.digicelfiji.com.

As for text messaging, each SMS sent to other Digicel numbers costs $0.12, while each text message sent to other networks and international destinations costs $0.15. Sending MMS, on the other hand, costs $0.05 per multimedia message sent.

Mobile users with WAP-enabled handsets may access mobile web for $3 per MB of data.

Digicel Prepaid Refills

Recharging Digicel prepaid accounts is easy with more than 25,000 top-up locations across Fiji. Subscribers may replenish their wireless airtime minutes by purchasing FLEX Cards (Digicel prepaid phone cards) or by topping-up through Direct FLEX (Digicel electronic prepaid top-up). Digicel customers may also buy Digicel prepaid load from Babblebug.com, which offers Digicel prepaid refill denominations ranging from US5$ to US$70.
