Digicel (El Salvador)

In April 2007, the Digicel Group launched its first operations in El Salvador, further pushing the mobile network to become the fastest growing telecommunications provider in the Caribbean and the latest network to deploy cellular operations in Central America.

In El Salvador, Digicel provides digital GSM coverage that reaches to about 95% of the country’s population. Digicel El Salvador’s history dates back to September 2006, when the Digicel Group acquired Digicel Holdings, an entirely unrelated company that had also provided communications services in the country. The acquisition resulted to the complete rebranding of the previous company to El Nuevo Digicel. Also, the mobile network agreed on a US$150 investment for the expansion and the upgrading of the existing mobile infrastructures to meet with the Digicel Group’s high-quality standards in providing mobile products and services to 32 markets in the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific.

Digicel El Salvador also offers 24/7 customer care and has about 500 retailers and 6,000 Digicel prepaid mobile recharge outlets located across the country. Today, the wireless network competes with other telecoms América Móvil, Millicom International Cellular, and Telefónica Móviles.

In 2011, América Móvil announced its 100% acquisition of Digicel El Salvador in exchange for Digicel Group’s acquisition of América Móvil operations in Jamaica. Today, the agreement is under way pending approval from government regulators.

Digicel Prepaid Pay-as-You-Go Plans

Digicel offers pay-as-you-go prepaid plans with the simplest rates. Calling to national mobile networks, fixed lines, United States, and Canada costs only (US dollars) $0.15 per minute. Although calling rates are published in minutes, actual charging of talk time is on a per-second basis.

As for text messaging, each SMS sent to domestic networks, USA, and Canada, costs $0.06, while each SMS sent to other international destinations is priced at $0.15. On the other hand, each multimedia message sent to any destination costs $0.1017. Digicel also provides internet access though the network’s GPRS coverage, which charges $0.0034 per kilobyte (KB) of data.

Digicel Prepaid Unlimited Text Messaging Plans

For only $5 per month with SMS Ilimitado Mensual (Unlimited Monthly SMS), one enjoys unlimited SMS sending to other Digicel numbers. Also, the SMS Ilimitado 15 Días, a 15-day unlimited prepaid SMS plan, is available for only $2.50. To subscribe to the unlimited SMS plans, one may dial *444# and follow instructions.

Digicel Prepaid Daily Internet Data Plan

By dialing *444#, subscribers may register to Digicel’s daily internet browsing package, which delivers 50MB of data for only $0.50.

Digicel subscribers in El Salvador may replenish their mobile airtime by purchasing Digicel prepaid top-up phone cards from retailers and Digicel stores. Also, one may log on to http://www.digicel.com.svand buy Digicel prepaid refill top-ups online using a credit card.
