Digicel (British Virgin Islands)

Since the deregulation of the telecommunications services in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in 2006, the mobile telephony market in the Caribbean territory has forever changed with the upending of the decades-long monopoly of Cable & Wireless in BVI. In December 2007, Digicel was finally awarded the license as the third wireless provider to enter the BVI mobile industry.

Digicel BVI is part of the Digicel Group, a mobile network operator launched in April 2001 in Jamaica. Today, Digicel Group is the fastest growing mobile network operator in its covered locations, serving more than 11.5 million subscribers in all its 32 markets in Central America, the Pacific, and the Caribbean.

The British Virgin Islands became the 24thterritory to enter the mobile operator’s growing market. With its initial investment of US$15 million, Digicel looks forward to becoming the number one wireless service provider in BVI with 100% population coverage.

In BVI, Digicel offers both postpaid and prepaid mobile services to cater to the different mobile usage patterns of the network’s subscribers. For many, the wireless provider’s prepaid services deliver the most cost-effective solution because such option does not require contract sign-ups, activation fees, mandatory monthly payments, and pre-termination fees.

Digicel Prepaid Plans

Digicel Flex

Digicel prepaid customers who intend to access the mobile network’s extensive coverage on a pay-as-you-go basis may choose Digicel Flex, the cellular network’s prepaid brand that offers cheaper on-net calls (local Digicel-to-Digicel) and international calls to other Digicel networks in the Caribbean.

Within the BVI, on-net calls and talk time to fixed lines cost $0.19 per minute during off-peak (Monday to Sunday, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.) and peak (Monday to Sunday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m.) hours, while international calls to Caribbean Mobiles are charged lower during off peak hours: only $0.20 per minute. During peak hours, mobile calling to the Caribbean Mobiles costs $0.25 per minute. Local off-net calls, on the other hand, are priced a flat rate of $0.35 per minute.

Caribbean Mobiles include Digicel cellular numbers in Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, Cayman, St Vincent, Curacao, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, Turks & Caicos, Trinidad, Haiti, and Jamaica.

With DigiFLEX, text messaging costs $0.09 per SMS sent to local Digicel numbers, $0.10 per SMS sent to other Digicel Caribbean networks, and $0.20 per SMS sent to other international destinations. Each multimedia message costs a flat rate of $0.30. Mobile web access, on the other hand, costs $0.01 per KB of data.

Caribbean Plan

Digicel’s Caribbean Plan is perhaps one of the most cost-effective calling plans and is available for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers. With this package, Digicel mobile users may choose the weekly or the monthly Caribbean option.

With the weekly package, one enjoys 300 minutes per day of airtime to participating Caribbean destinations, all for only $14 a week. On the other hand, the monthly Caribbean Plan delivers a better deal by providing 300 minutes of talk time per day for 30 days, charging $49, which is about $7 cheaper as compared to continuously subscribing on a per-week basis.

Participating territories and countries include Anguilla, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Cayman, Curacao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands. Among the Caribbean destinations, Antigua is not included.

Digicel prepaid users may dial *132# to activate the $14/week Caribbean Plan or dial *134# to choose the $49/month prepaid package.

One may also purchase Digicel prepaid refills from Touch-N-Buy retail stores located across the United States.
