Digicel (Barbados)Digicel Barbados is a mobile network operator established on February 11, 2004 by the Digicel Group, a telecommunications provider founded in 2001 and now serves about 11.5 million customers and manages more than 1,000 retail stores spread across 32 countries and territories in the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific. In 2006, Digicel Group expanded its operations toward Central America with the cellular provider’s acquisition of El Salvador’s Digicel Holdings, which was later rebranded as El Nuevo Digicel, now the leading communications provider in El Salvador. In the succeeding years, Digicel has maintained its growth by launching mobile networks in Honduras, Panama, and the British Virgin Islands. Other acquisitions entered into by the Digicel Group were U*Mobile in Guyana in 2007 and America Movil’s entire operations in Jamaica in 2011. The telecommunications company has also acquired a controlling stake in the Caribbean-based Nextar Technologies. Digicel Barbados Prepaid Plans Digicel Flex Digicel Flex is the mobile service provider’s prepaid brand, which requires no monthly service fees, lock-in periods, and network connection fees. With DigiFLEX, subscribers enjoy lower calling rates during nights (8 p.m.-6 a.m.) and weekends (Friday, 12 a.m. to Sunday, 12 a.m.). And with Digicel-to-Digicel airtime, only the first three minutes of each call are charged, and the succeeding minutes will be free. Outgoing Digicel-to-Digicel calls cost BBD0.51 per minute during the day and only BBD0.46 per minute in the evening, while on-net calls on weekends cost only BBD0.31 per minute. Calls to fixed lines and other mobile phones cost BBD0.72 per minute during peak hours, BBD0.67 per minute during off-peak hours, and BBD0.60 per minute on weekends. Incoming calls from fixed lines, however, are charged a flat rate of BBD0.51 per minute, while incoming calls from mobile phones are free of charge. DigiTEXT and MMS With DigiTEXT, prepaid subscribers may send domestic text messages at a flat rate of only BBD0.21 per 160-character SMS, while incoming text messages are free. As for sending MMS, each multimedia message sent costs BBD0.75. Digicel Classic Friends and Family Digicel Barbados prepaid users may subscribe to the cellular provider’s Classic Friends and Family prepaid plan, which entitles the subscriber a 25% discount on all calls made to up to four Friends & Family numbers, which may include up to three Digicel numbers and 1 landline number. The Classic F&F prepaid option charges a monthly subscription fee of BBD3. To initiate the Classic F&F list, one needs to dial *147#, after which further instructions are sent to the subscriber through SMS. Newly added Classic F&F number will remain active on the list for 90 days. The subscriber will receive a notification and instructions for renewal before the 90-day expiry. Digicel Prepaid Refill Top-Ups Digicel prepaid refills may be purchased from Digicel retailers across Barbados. And for those in the United States or Canada who wish to forward top-ups to their friends and family members in Barbados, the CaribFLEX offers electronic Digicel top-ups without the need to purchase top-up cards.
