Claro (Guatemala)

Launched in Guatemala in September 2006, Claro is a mobile brand owned by América Móvil, a leading telecommunications company based in Mexico. The telecom entered the Guatemalan market after América Móvil’s acquisition of Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala (Telgua) in 2000.

Until the 2006 adoption of Claro as the telecom’s brand name for both cellular and fixed telephony services, Telgua had operated under the previous brand names ALO and PCS Digital.

América Móvil, Claro’s parent company, is one of the largest communications providers on a global scale, serving more than 200 million subscribers with all its cellular market combined. América Móvil provides coverage in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay.

To date, Claro has been heralded as one of the leading wireless providers in Guatemala, covering about 37% of the Guatemalan wireless customer base or about 6.4 million subscribers as of 2010. Claro provides GSM, GPRS, EDGE, or UMTS/HSPA coverage, penetrating to more than 40 cities across the country. Claro’s dominance in the 3G market has appealed to many subscribers whose need for data services continues to grow annually.

Claro Prepaid Plans

Claro Welcome Package

As a reward for choosing Claro, a welcome package is automatically credited to one’s prepaid account upon SIM card activation and upon purchasing an initial prepaid top-up worth (Guatemalan Quetzal) Q10. The welcome package includes Q100-worth of mobile airtime, a daily allocation of 100MB of mobile data for 30 days from the date of activation, 30 daily SMS allocation for 7 days, and a caller ringback. The services come at no extra cost from the date of activation.

Llamadas Ilimitadas a tus 7 Números Favoritos (Claro Unlimited mobile calling to 7 favorite numbers)

Frequent mobile callers who regularly dial favorite phone numbers may opt-in for this plan, which charges an initial fee of Q5 for the registration of the first two favorite landline or mobile numbers. Each subsequent registration of a special number (up to 5 additional numbers) will be charged Q1. This daily plan delivers unlimited calling to the registered numbers the entire day. To register, Claro customers may dial *555 and choose Option 2.

Claro Prepaid Internet Plans

Claro prepaid subscribers with 3G or EDGE handsets may subscribe to Claro’s prepaid internet packages, offered in denominations of Q5 (250MB), Q15 (1GB), Q100 (3GB), Q175 (5GB), and Q325 (8GB), with expiry period of 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 15 days, and 30 days, respectively. To subscribe, Claro customers may dial 313 from their mobile phone.

Claro Prepaid Refills

In Guatemala, Claro customers may recharge their airtime minutes by purchasing Claro prepaid top-ups from Claro stores, automated teller machines (ATMs), authorized dealers, or through Claro’s customer service hotline. Also, Claro subscribers may purchase Claro prepaid electronic airtime refills from authorized dealers, doing away with prepaid scratch cards.

For international top-ups, Babblebug.com offers Claro prepaid refill denominations of US$5, US$10, US$20, and US$30, which may be purchased using a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. The prepaid recharge will be automatically converted to Guatemala’s local currency upon purchase.

Roaming customers located outside Guatemala may dial *111 from their mobile phone.
