Claro (El Salvador)

A cellular brand owned by the Mexican América Móvil, Claro was launched in El Salvador in September 2006. In the same month, Claro, being the largest telecommunications provider in the Americas, also launched its first cellular operations in Honduras and Nicaragua. In the three countries, Claro operates GSM/GPRS infrastructures under the frequency of 1900MHz.

Claro’s owner, América Móvil, is one of the largest mobile networks in the world with over 200 million subscribers, providing cellular coverage in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.

In English, “Claro” means either “bright,” “clear,” or “of course,” which is a testament of the company’s determination to become a leader in providing cutting-edge telecommunications services on a global scale. In the first quarter of 2011, Claro once again proved it dominance in the Americas by announcing its plans to acquire the entire Digicel operations in El Salvador in exchange for Claro’s operations in Jamaica. The proposed acquisition is on its final stages pending the approval from El Salvador’s telecommunications regulators.

Today, Claro El Salvador offers cost-effective wireless services to its millions of customers in the country. Claro Prepaid Plans

Claro Prepaid Pay-as-You-Go Plans

With Claro prepaid pay-as-you-go, mobile calls to any domestic destinations cost only (US Dollars) $0.14 per minute or an equivalent per-second rate of $0.00233. This option is the default plan included in all newly activated Claro SIM cards. Existing Claro subscribers who intend to take advantage of the pay-as-you-go prepaid rate may dial *555 from their mobile phone and press option 1. Activation is free of charge.

Claro SMS users may also subscribe to the SMS prepaid package, which costs $0.50 per 50 SMS allocations. One needs to dial *555 to subscribe to the service.

Paquetes Internet Claro Prepago (Claro Prepaid Internet Packages)

Claro offers mobile internet access with data allocations 50MB ($0.50), 100MB ($1), 400MB ($5), and 900MB ($8), with validity periods of 1 day for the 50MB and 100MB options, and 7 days and 15 days for the 400MB and 900MB packages, respectively. Except the 50MB package, which delivers a download speed of only 128Kbps, the higher internet plans deliver speeds of up to 1.5Mbps.

Claro Prepaid Refills

Claro prepaid users may replenish their mobile airtime by purchasing Claro prepaid top-ups from participating banks, retail stores, pharmacies, kiosks, supermarkets, restaurants and Claro stores located in El Salvador. One may also purchase Claro electronic prepaid refill top-ups from authorized agencies and dealers anywhere in the country.

For international prepaid top-up load, customers may visit Babblebug.com and purchase Claro prepaid mobile airtime recharge ranging from US$5 to US$70. Babblebug.com accepts credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal as modes of payment.
