Cellink (Guyana)

Cellink is a cellular brand owned by Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), a fixed Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) that provides landline and mobile services throughout the South American country of Guyana. Through the mobile brand Cellink, GT&T operates both TDMA and GSM mobile infrastructures, offering both postpaid and prepaid services at affordable rates.

GT&T’s history in Guyana dates back to the late 1980’s, when the Government of Guyana moved forward with the privatization of the country’s telecommunications industry. As a result, Atlantic Tele-Network acquired 80% of the communications infrastructures of Guyana, while the remaining 20% remains under the government’s ownership.

The acquisition and privatization of Guyana’s communications sector resulted to the establishment of GT&T in 1991, commencing its initial operations in January. As of 2004, GT&T’s total investment already reached US$195 million as the network continued to improve its overall communications infrastructures to remain competitive in the global market.

Today, Cellink, under which GT&T operates its wireless services, provides local mobile calling, international voice, SMS, and data services. Cellink also entitles its customers free GPRS mobile web browsing.

Cellink Prepaid Plans

In comparison to other networks, Cellink offers the simplest prepaid pay-as-you-go tariff, doing away with complicated add-ons and value-added services.

Cellink Prepaid Pay-As-You-Go Airtime Rates

With Cellink, the first ten minutes of on-net mobile calls cost (Guyanese dollar) $20 per minute. Subsequent on-net calls during the same day will be charged a lower airtime rate of only $1 per minute. On the other hand, calls to landline and other domestic networks cost $10 per minute and $20 per minute, respectively.

Cellink Prepaid Pay-as-You-Go SMS and MMS Rates

For local text messaging and multimedia messaging, each SMS sent costs $0.99, while each MMS sent is charged $11.60. On the other hand, each SMS sent to international destinations costs $9.28.

Value-Added Services

Cellink subscribers may spend an extra $213.00 per month for call forwarding, $142 per month for call waiting, $284 per month for caller ID blocking, or $11.60 for voicemail retrieval. Except for voicemail, which requires no monthly fee, the other calling features require a 6-month advance payment.

Cellink Prepaid Refills

Cellink mobile users may top-up their prepaid airtime online, or one may purchase Cellink prepaid load from authorized dealers and Cellink or GT&T stores. Cellink prepaid top-ups may also be purchased on Babblebug.com, which offers Cellink prepaid recharge denominations ranging from US$5 to US$70. Babblebug.com accepts credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal as payment options. Once purchased, the Cellink prepaid refill will be converted to Guyana’s local currency.
