Cellcom (Guinea)Cellcom is a mobile network operator based in the West African country of Guinea. The wireless provider is owned by Cellcom Telecommunications Limited, a communications company established in 2004, when the telecom commenced its initial operations in Liberia. In other regions, Cellcom also operates mobile infrastructures in Angola and Sierra Leone. Cellcom Guinea was launched in May 2008, when Ericsson successfully deployed the wireless operator’s GSM infrastructures across the country. Having invested more than US$100 million to date, Cellcom, which became the fifth entrant to the Guinean telecommunications market, now holds the second spot among the largest telecoms in Guinea. Today, Cellcom boasts more than 650,000 subscribers, penetrating about 65 percent of the Guinean population across more than 40 localities and employing over 600 employees. In March 2008, Emerging Capital Partners was reported to have invested US$20 million in Cellcom Telecommunication Limited, Cellcom Guinea’s parent company. In Guinea, Cellcom offers GSM mobile coverage supporting
local and international airtime, data, SMS, and other value-added services to
its cellular subscribers. The network’s affordable prepaid services appeal
greatly to the Guinean population, contributing significantly to the wireless
network’s success in recent years.

Cellcom Prepaid Plans Cellcom Guinea allows subscribers to choose either per-rounding or per-second airtime charging. New Cellcom SIM cards are, by default, on the per-round billing mode, which rounds domestic call charges to the nearest 12thsecond of each call. International calls, on the other hand, are charged every 20 seconds. Per-Rounding Billing With the default charging scheme, national calls to other Cellcom numbers cost (Guinean franc) GNF420 per minute, while national calls to other network operators are charged GNF550 per minute. As for international calls, talk time costs GNF999 per minute to Cellcom numbers in Liberia; GNF2160 per minute to Africa, Europe, and Asia; GNF1500 per minute to North America; and GNF3600 per minute to South America and Oceania. Sending SMS to other Cellcom mobile numbers costs cheaper at GNF100 per text message; while each SMS sent to other networks is charged GNF200. International SMS costs GNF500 per message sent. Per-Second Billing By dialing *885#, subscribers may activate the per-second billing option, the switching cost of which is GNF100. For national calls, per-minute of talk time within the Cellcom Guinea network costs GNF480. Calls to other network operators, on the other hand, costs GNF540 per minute. As for international airtime, mobile calls cost GNF1020 per minute to Cellcom numbers in Liberia; GNF2160 per minute to Africa, Europe, and Asia; GNF1500 per minute to North America; and GNF3600 to South America and Oceania. Text messaging costs GNF100 for each on-net SMS, GNF200 for each off-net SMS, and GNF500 for each text message sent to international destinations. With Cellcom prepaid services, basic calling features such as caller ID, second call waiting, conference call, and voicemail are already included. Cellcom Guinea Prepaid Refills Cellcom prepaid top-ups may be purchased from Cellcom stores, retailers, and authorized dealers located across Guinea.
