Suntel (Sri Lanka)Suntel is currently the largest CDMA service provider in the country, also supporting fixed line and mobile internet services. With all its landline and wireless infrastructures combined, it is one of the fastest growing telecommunications companies in South Asia. Suntel was established in 1996 as a joint venture of Overseas Telecom AB, Metrocorp, Townsend, National Development Bank, and International Finance Corporation. In February 1996, Suntel received its initial license to provide communications services in Sri Lanka. Through the network’s agreement with Ericsson, Suntel successfully launched its operations in December of the same year. Following the liberalization of the Sri Lankan telecom industry in the 1990’s, the country’s number of telephone lines increased by 84% between 1997 and 1999, empowering Suntel to be the first to introduce ISDN and multi-party video conferencing technologies, the promising advantages of which have attracted more corporate clients. With Suntel’s efforts to maintain high quality standards and fair yet affordable service tariffs, the network in 2000 received the ISO 9001:2000 certification, a testament to the world-class services which Suntel has achieved and maintained over the years.
