Indosat (StarOne)StarOne is a CDMA-based communications division of Indosat, one of the largest telecommunications providers in Indonesia. The mobile brand offers both wireless and fixed line communications using the service provider’s CDMA 2000 1xRTT technology and public switch telephone networks (PSTNs). Indosat, formerly known as PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation Tbk, not only provides CDMA and fixed line coverage in the country, but the network also offers GSM and 3.5G services through IM3, the youth-oriented GSM brand, and Mentari, another GSM brand geared for mobile subscribers who frequently use direct long distance and international roaming services. Indosat was launched in November 1967 as a foreign investment company, the commercial operations of which opened in September 1969. In 2000, the Indonesian government moved forward with the deregulation of the country’s telecommunications industry, ushering in a more competitive market where international players took the advantage of acquiring majority of Indosat’s shares. Today, 65% of Indosat is owned by Qatar Telecom, while the remaining 20.71% and 14.29% are owned by the public and the Indonesian government, respectively. Indosat, which ranks as the third largest communications provider in Indonesia, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Indonesian Stock Exchange. In July 2011, reports confirmed the ongoing merging plans
between Indosat’s StarOne and Telkom’s Flexi, both of which offer similar CDMA
technology. The eventual fusion of StarOne and Flexi promises greater CDMA
coverage never before seen in the country. And with the already affordable
plans that both Flexi and StarOne currently offer, the resulting merger would
provide even more cost effective tariffs and promotions to the networks’
millions of subscribers.
