Indosat (IM3)

A prepaid brand geared toward Indonesia’s younger consumer base, IM3 provides affordable pay-as-you-go GSM packages that dominantly comprise multimedia, data, video calling, and Blackberry services. Owned by PT Indosat Tbk., IM3 also supports cost-effective social networking and blogging access, essentially addressing the needs of a younger mobile market.

Indosat, formerly known as PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation Tbk., is IM3’s backbone in providing GSM coverage across the islands of Indonesia. Today, the cellular network operates three GSM wireless divisions: Mentari (postpaid); Matrix, a prepaid brand that caters mostly to families and roaming subscribers; and IM3. Besides operating GSM infrastructures, Indosat provides fixed telephony services and StarOne, another Indosat brand that supports CDMA coverage. And recently, the network operator launched its first 3.5G or HSPA infrastructures, a technology that aims to deliver faster data transfer speeds for seamless video calling and mobile internet access.

Indosat was initially launched in November 1967 as a state-owned foreign investment company, the first commercial operations of which was established in September 1969. Thirty years later, the deregulation of Indonesia’s telecommunications industry had resulted to a nationwide overhaul of Indosat’s corporate structure.

Today, Qatar Telecom controls 65% of the company’s shares. The remaining 20.71% and 14.29% belong to the trading public and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, respectively. In Indonesia, Indosat ranks third among the largest telecommunications companies in the country, serving more than 40 million subscribers. Currently, Indosat is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

The award-winning IM3 prepaid brand of Indosat continues to provide innovative products and services to the network’s millions of prepaid users, who take advantage of IM3’s reliable coverage without signing up for lengthy contracts that require hefty monthly bills and unnecessary fees.
