A member of the Axiata Group, Celcom Axiata Berhad is the second largest mobile network operator in Malaysia. Established in 1988, the cellular provider is headquartered in the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur. Celcom supports GSM and CDMA technologies in providing wireless coverage that reaches about 97% of the Malaysia's entire population.
Celcom's history dates back to its inception in the late 1980s, when its predecessor, STM Cellular Communications, deployed the company's first analogue wireless infrastructures. By the turn of the decade, when GSM technology quickly became the gold standard in digital mobile communications, Celcom upgraded its infrastructures to GSM 900 MHz, which resulted to a significant rise of the company's subscriber base. Later on, Celcom deployed GSM 1800 MHz infrastructures to improve its coverage even further.
As of 2006, Celcom's 2G and 3G coverage was gaining momentum as more subscribers, mostly the youth, began to rely heavily on mobile internet for multimedia and entertainment, hence the introduction of the Xpax prepaid brand. With 3G services widely available in the country, data transfer speeds improved, making multimedia streaming and even video calling a possibility.
Today, Celcom Axiata boasts more than 11 million subscribers, providing cellular coverage that reaches virtually 100% of Malaysia's population. The telecommunications company also partners with mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in providing cost-effective wireless services. In terms of international roaming coverage, Celcom, at present, partners with more than 400 international networks in 156 countries across the globe.
